History

In 1972 Nakayama Masatoshi Shihan chose the name of the first place he stayed at when studying in China for the name of his newly finished personal dojo: Hoitsugan. The name most closely translates as “the place where people with similar goals practice and study together”. One of Nakayama Shihan's desires was to develop and expand karate worldwide as a means of fostering friendships and improved international relations. To this end, Shihan made his personal dojo in the basement of his apartment building along with a small dormitory for international karate-ka to come and stay. Over the years hundreds, if not thousands, have stayed, lived and enjoyed training in this remarkable place.
